<p><strong>London, United Kingdom, April 7, 2026: </strong>New research from IRIS Software Group suggests practice leaders risk overlooking the role of technology in attracting and retaining young talent, as early-career accountants reveal they lose 33 days of productive time per year* to inefficient and outdated systems. </p>
<p>The IRIS study of 500 final-year accounting students, recent graduates and early-career accounting professionals** revealed a significant gap between the technologies young colleagues expected to have access to and the practices available to them. </p>
<p>Nearly half (43%) expect modern cloud-based systems to be in place and 34% expect seamless, integrated technology to be applied across all workflows. However, 40% of respondents already in training or working full-time admitted to spending a lot of time on manual data entry – and a quarter (25%) work on more than five disconnected systems daily. Early-career accountants have revealed that these problems result in a loss of five hours per week, which equates to 33 days of lost productive time each year. </p>
<p><strong>Technology as a retention tool</strong> </p>
<p>IRIS findings highlighted the role of technology in supporting the day-to-day experience that drives staff retention. When asked what would entice them to stay at a company even if they received a higher salary offer elsewhere, 24% said great technology and efficient processes – putting technology ahead of relationships between colleagues and leaders (22%), interest in the job (17%) and company culture and values ​​(15%) to stay in place. </p>
<p>While work-life balance (54%) and salary (50%) were high on the list of most important factors when young talent is looking for their first accounting role, one in five (20%) also believe it was important to see work-simplifying technology processes in their first job. Only 1% said salary was the most important factor in choosing where to work. </p>
<p><strong>Jonathan Priestley, Managing Director of Global Accounting Solutions and Transformation at IRIS Accountancy</strong>said: “Modernizing practices is often discussed in terms of productivity and profitability. But it is rarely seen as a factor in attracting and retaining talent – ​​despite chronic skills shortages in the sector. </p>
<p>“The profession is at a crossroads. Companies are being asked to do more with less, while meeting the growing expectations of the new generation of talent who will not accept inefficient and disconnected workflows as the norm. </p>
<p>“It’s clear that businesses need to establish a new model for growing their practices, setting out a clear strategy focused on technology and efficiency, so that junior staff are not wasting time on outdated processes and accountants can access the high-value consultancy work that actually increases margins. </p>
<p><strong>Businesses of the future</strong> </p>
<p>Technology frustrations appear to be shaping how the next generation believes businesses should evolve. Nearly nine in ten (89%) believe that the digitalization of tax will force businesses to modernize their systems in a way that will directly benefit accountants early in their careers.  </p>
<p>When asked what their priorities would be if they became managing partner tomorrow, 44% said immediately investing in modern, integrated technology and automation – rising to 54% among qualified accountants and 70% among those with five years of experience. Almost all (94%) believe that connected technology would allow them to do their work better. </p>
<p>The research also raises broader questions about the traditional career path at the profession&#8217;s biggest companies. More than half of those surveyed (54%) believe the Big Four is becoming a less reliable path to success, even though the majority of young talent still aims for careers at the industry&#8217;s biggest companies.  </p>
<p><strong>Jonathan Priestley added:</strong> “Practices that view MTD as a compliance burden will modernize at a minimum, while those that embrace the digital shift will recognize it as the moment young accountants have been waiting for, and will emerge operationally stronger and better placed to attract and retain the talent the industry is fighting for. But the broader pattern is clear: the longer people work at these firms, the more certain they become about what&#8217;s holding them back. </p>
<p>&#8220;What our research shows is that the companies most likely to win the battle for talent are those that invest in their people and technology in equal measure &#8211; not those with reputations and big names. The companies that recognize this and act on it now, before MTD forces their hand, are the ones that will emerge from the next few years in a fundamentally stronger position.&#8221; </p>

<p>A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.</p>

<p>You may have seen the controversial marketing campaign in London this summer, in which an artificial intelligence (AI) provider directly fueled fears that it was replacing jobs.</p>
<p>The provider ran adverts across London, using slogans such as: AI doesn&#8217;t need to take vacation or sick days on Mondays.</p>
<p>This direct reference to the fear that AI will take jobs immediately sparked negative reactions.</p>
<p>This really struck a chord, as this fear of replacement is very real for many workers.</p>
<p>AI, like many modern technologies, can have incredible benefits, but only if people trust it and willingly adopt it.</p>
<p>So, what can we do to change the narrative? How can businesses enable their employees to take advantage of this new technology?</p>
<p>To better understand ethical AI leadership and managing technological change, we hosted a webinar with Director of Human Resources Lizzy Barry, Director of Human Resources Consulting Dan Grace, and Senior Training and Development Advisor Vanessa Aradia.</p>
<p>In this blog, I summarized part of their conversation about how businesses can change mindsets away from fear.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Understanding human emotion</h2>
<p>To kick off the discussion, Vanessa touched on the emotional element of change, reflecting on past technological innovation and the current AI landscape, saying:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;</em><em>If we strip away the buzzwords and headlines, we&#8217;re actually talking about human emotion.</em></p>
<p><em>“How do people <strong>what I think of AI</strong>?</em></p>
<p><em>“For most, it&#8217;s a mixture of fascination, fatigue and fear, and that&#8217;s completely reasonable.</em></p>
<p><em>“Every major technological advance has been met with the same response, namely uncertainty about what it means for our jobs, our identity and our value. </em></p>
<p><em>“I did a survey and when you listen to the real concerns of employees, they are rarely about the technology itself, but rather about trust, transparency and fairness. </em></p>

<p><em>“We don’t just develop the technical skills of our teams, we develop their human skills.</em></p>
<p><em>“If we help our employees feel safe, curious and confident, every technical challenge becomes manageable.</em></p>
<p><em>“As we know, this human story of adaptation is far from new: it has been going on since the days when horsepower meant horses.” </em></p>

<p>Lizzy added to Vanessa&#8217;s point, sharing how she helped manage AI adoption at IRIS, explaining: <em>“It&#8217;s been really interesting within IRIS! We&#8217;ve been doing things like AI hackathons and giving employees the chance to play with tools they might not have used before.</em></p>
<p><em>“We often challenge ourselves: Can you use AI to generate this? How would you look at this result and determine if something is true?”</em></p>
<p><em>“Being able to start using AI and seeing what it can do is often a very clear way to eliminate some of that fear, because we can immediately see that AI is not perfect and it doesn&#8217;t always give us the finely crafted end result that we need.</em></p>
<p><em>“Even if the result looks good, we know that AI can hallucinate or have built-in errors and assumptions that we then need to check.</em></p>
<p><em>“Certainly, getting stuck in is really helpful in supporting people and helping them feel confident in using it for that raise, rather than worrying that it&#8217;s going to replace us tomorrow.”</em></p>

<p>During the webinar, Dan shared his experience implementing AI tools both internally at IRIS and with clients: <em>“I&#8217;m really going to play on the word increase, because it&#8217;s really important.</em><strong><em/></strong></p>
<p><em>“I help deploy AI tools internally at IRIS, but I also help clients determine what the right decision is for them.</em></p>
<p><em>“One of the questions we always ask ourselves: does this replace me?</em></p>
<p><em>“One of the messages that we always share with the people that we are integrating this change with is that this tool is there to improve and help provide better service.</em></p>
<p><em>“This is not a replacement, we just want to provide a better service to customers and colleagues – the aim is to try and improve and be better where we can.</em></p>
<p><em>“Ultimately, with change comes a shift in roles and priorities – there&#8217;s no escaping it.</em></p>
<p><em>“But it&#8217;s all about doing the right thing for our customers, our employees and our colleagues, deploying the best tools and staying ahead of the curve.</em></p>
<p><em>“I&#8217;ve found that when it comes to implementation, if the implementation fails, it&#8217;s not because of the people using the tools.</em></p>
<p><em>“This is generally due to a hesitation in providing tools and a lack of buy-in and effective deployment from leadership.</em></p>
<p><em>“Most people, just about everyone I know, have experienced AI tools, whether in their personal or professional lives.</em></p>
<p><em>“If you look at some statistics, ChatGPT was one of the fastest growing apps.</em></p>
<p><em>“People use these tools in their daily lives and, in fact, you can&#8217;t even use Google now without it giving you some sort of AI search options.</em></p>
<p><em>“AI is everywhere, so if your leadership and strategy doesn&#8217;t support these tools, it&#8217;s really going to collapse at the first hurdle.</em></p>
<p><em>“You really need to convince leadership that adopting these tools to help your staff is the right decision to help support the business, customers and employees.</em></p>
<p><em>“However, we should not deploy these tools just to use them: they require careful consideration, to ensure they are the right decision. »</em></p>
